Japan

Here you will learn everything you need to know about the drone laws in Japan.

Overview:

Keep distance to airfields and heliports

It is only allowed to fly up to 150 m high

Keep 30 m horizontal distance to people and buildings

Only fly during the day

There must always be visual line of sight to the drone

Do not fly under the influence of alcohol or drugs

In Detail:

Japan has relatively loose drone laws, but you should still fly carefully and not endanger other people or animals. Do not fly near events such as concerts. It is explicitly forbidden to use drones to carry “dangerous materials” or drop something during the flight (whether intentionally or not). Japan has a map showing the no-fly zones (unfortunately the map is only available in Japanese).

For a quick overview of the different no-fly zones, the MLIT chart is helpful.

Exceptions:

If you want to fly in one of the prohibited zones, you have to send an e-mail (in Japanese) to this e-mail address.
