Here you will learn everything you need to know about the drone laws in Canada.
Overview:
Keep 5.6 km from airports and 1.9 km from heliports
Do not fly in the vicinity of police or rescue operations
It is only allowed to fly up to 120 m high
Do not fly in National Parks
There must always be visual line of sight to the drone
Keep 30 m distance from other people (do not fly over them)
Each drone must be labeled and registered
The drone must not weigh more than 25 kg
A test is necessary to fly a drone
In Detail:
In Canada, it is mandatory to register every drone. As a Canadian you can do that here. But if you are a foreigner, you have to fill out a form and send it by mail. More information can be found here. A registration costs 5 $ and is mandatory for drones weighing 250 g or more. In addition, a certificate is required to fly the drone. The certificate distinguishes between “basic” and “advanced” applications. “Basic” means that you do not want to use the drone in controlled airspace or within 30 m horizontal distance to other people. “Advanced” means that you don’t want to have these two restrictions. For the Basic certificate you only have to pass an online test. The advanced test requires a “flight review”, i.e. a practical test requires you to demonstrate your flight skills in the presence of an examiner. The drone should not be used in controlled airspace (without Advanced certificate) or at public events such as concerts or parades. The no-fly zones can be found on the official map.
For another quick overview, the TCCA flyer is very helpful.
Exceptions:
If you want to use the drone outside the usual rules, you have to apply for an Advanced certificate.
